Why I Hate Writing Sponsored Posts
One of the more unpleasant things I’ve been having to do for Creative Weblogging as of late is writing the dreaded sponsored post. Blog occassionally lack a dedicated blogger for various reasons. CW pays me to “fill in”. Unfortunately for me, this also includes writing that blogs sponsored posts.
A sponsored post is a post that is paid for by the sponsor. In exchange for whatever CW charges for a sponsored blog, the sponsor gets guaranteed editorial coverage once a week as well as advertising space on the site.
I understand that CW has to do this to make money and this is one way this happens. That’s the only reason I’m willing to do them. That being said, I normally only write about things that I personally find interesting.
If you listen to any of Leo Laporte’s podcasts, you’ll know that he only takes on sponsors that he feels passionate about. Unfortunately, I don’t get a lot of say in who sponsors a CW blog and thus the subject of these sponsored posts. Not impossible to write these posts, but it’s a lot harder when I don’t have passion working for me.
Edit: I removed a reference to a specific CW blog and sponsor in this post.
