Nokia Phones Can Be Upgraded By End Users
From the About Nokia blog, it's now possible to upgrade the firmware on many of the more recent Nokia Series 60 phones using a USB cable and a piece of software called Nokia Software Updater. Right now, this is available on a limited set of phones (Nokia 6630, 6680, 6681, 6682, N70, N72). My sources tell me this list will exapand to a much larger list in the coming months.
(Something else that's cool: the Nokia 6131 can apparently be updated Over the Air, i.e. doesn't require a cable!)
I have used this software myself and it accomplishes it's goal fairly easily. Having seen the scary software and hardware used for traditional flashing stations, it's nice to see the process made about as simple as updating the music in your iPod. Of course, there is the downside of losing all the data in your phone unless you take appropriate precautions. The software does give you plenty of warnings about this.
Edit: Added the supported phone list.
