Geeks and Autism
Well I think I’m caught up on my RSS feeds now.
I got a couple of good articles from Digg today. One was a relatively dated article on Autism and Geeks from Wired, the other was a more recent article that asks the question: Would you have allowed Bill Gates to be born? The reason: it’s looking like we will soon be able to screen for autism in fetuses and technology geeks are often viewed as anywhere from mildly austistic (e.g. Asperger’s syndrome) to full-blown autism.
The more I read about Autism and Asperger’s syndrome, the more I think it does something to explain some of the stuff I went through growing up, not to mention some of the problems I still experience today in social interactions with other people. Over the years, I’ve learned to deal with some of these problems, though in some circumstances, I still find myself with an inability to relate to others effectively. And while, for the most part, it doesn’t bother me, where it does become problematic is with my wife since I have to relate to her every day.
