I agree with your article 100%. I use MacOS, Linux, and Windows and each OS has its advantages and disadvantages. While most of my coworkers in our 120 person IS staff are staunch Windows followers, I have opened the door to Linux for those interested by doing a series of Linux lunch-n-learns. After the first class, everybody that took the class installed Ubuntu on something and most actually use it for something.

I think the biggest limitor isn't really anything that anyone ever hits on. I've wanted to check out Linux for a while now, and frankly, I don't have the time.

And by time I mean the time it takes 1. to poke around and 2. to learn a new OS. Yes I know that Linux is more and more user-friendly with each release, but this is one instance in which I'm just like the rest of most of society. I expect to be able to push the power button on my PC and have it come on and work. I don't have time to jack around with firewalls and drivers and the like. I have windows by virtue of pre-installation, and that's what I like because I've used it for so long. I don't try anything else because I'm already well established in Windows.

What would it take to convert me? For me, I think one of 2 things: 1. a video showing installation and usage. Nothing fancy, I'd just like to watch someone walk through installation, and then play around and do some of the mainstream activities (surf the internet, manipulate media files, etc.) or 2. a web-based simulator. Let me pull up linuxdemo.com or something and have the website be a big java or ajax simulation of a Linux desktop that I can fool around in.

It has to be zero-risk for me to be interested. Supposedly, once I've played with it, I won't want Windows anymore. It's that first hump I have to get over.
