Whre I come from (Denmark) I have never seen a crippled phone. The carrier branding is often not that intrusive, like my N73 the branding was a startup logo from the carrier and the default homepage of the browser was the carriers. Both was easily changed. But honestly, would you expect anything else from providers? The only way is to buy unlocked and pay-as-you go.
