They Say They Want an Evolution
Novell has done a very cool thing: Made their Novell Connector product (formerly Ximian Connector) Open Source. It basically allows their Evolution email client, which runs on Linux, to talk to a Microsoft Exchange server. While you can do that with any old IMAP client, what you can’t do is use the groupware functionality: namely the ability to use the global address book and use the calendaring functionality. In other words, I can use Microsoft Exchange and get the full experience without having to use a Windows OS.
While I really like Mozilla Thunderbird, the ability to interact with Microsoft Exchange and not feel like a second class citizen wins out, at least for my corporate email. I’ll also have to play with Evolution for my personal email as well and see how I like it.
